COMLEX-USA

The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) is the leading assessment organization for the osteopathic medical profession. By providing standardized exams to assess the competency of all osteopathic medical students and physicians throughout their training, the NBOME protects the public by guaranteeing that all DO’s meet the same national standards of medical knowledge and clinical skill.

All TouroCOM students must demonstrate satisfactory performance on the NBOME COMLEX-USA Level 1 and Level 2 (CE) exams as a requirement for graduation.

Students take the COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam at the end of their second and before their third year. COMLEX-USA Level 1 is a problem- and symptom-based assessment, administered in a time-measured environment that integrates the foundational and basic biomedical sciences and other areas of medical knowledge relevant to solving clinical problems and promoting and maintaining health in providing osteopathic medical care to patients. The exam assesses medical knowledge in the areas of anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry, health promotion and disease prevention, microbiology, osteopathic principles, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology.

Students take COMLEX-USA Level 2-Cognitive Evaluation (CE) between the third and fourth year. COMLEX-USA Level 2-CE is a one-day, computer-based assessment that integrates application of knowledge in clinical and foundational biomedical sciences with other physician competencies related to the clinical care of patients and promoting health in supervised clinical settings. Competency domains assessed include the application of osteopathic medical knowledge, osteopathic patient care, osteopathic principles and practice, communication skills, systems-based practice, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and ethics. Clinical science disciplines include Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Osteopathic Principles and Practice, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery.

The COMLEX-USA Level 2-Performance Evaluation (Level 2-PE) has been formally discontinued by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME). This exam provided an assessment of fundamental clinical skills. These skills were evaluated in the context of 12 clinical encounters and were required to be performed with standardized patients. The Level 2- PE was an assessment of six fundamental clinical skills within two scored examination domains: the Humanistic Domain and the Biomedical/Biomechanical Domain.

Students are required to demonstrate satisfactory performance on the Clinical Skills Assessment, CSA, administered by the Department of Primary Care in collaboration with the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, in lieu of the NBOME Level 2 -PE exam, as a graduation requirement.

COMLEX-USA Level 3 is a two-day computer-based examination assessing competence in the foundational competency domains required for generalist physicians to deliver safe and effective osteopathic medical care and promote health in unsupervised clinical settings. Students take COMLEX-USA Level 3 after graduating from medical school.
