Why Seek Counseling

Students are welcome to seek counseling services for any kind of issue. We recommend that students seek help when their concerns are starting to get in the way of their studies or interfering with their ability to function at their best. However, it’s never too early or too late to call Counseling & Wellness for support.

Some common reasons that students seek counseling are:


  • Burnout is a reality in medical school. Factors leading to burnout are piles of school work, lack of sleep, poor eating habits, concurrent family demands, limited or no physical exercise, poor time management and unrealistic goals. Burnout results from emotional and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress.


  • Excessive worries (“what if” thoughts) that are difficult to control, nervousness and tension, restlessness, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty concentrating. Anxiety is most commonly triggered by stressful life experiences, including the demands of medical training.


  • Persistent sadness, loss of motivation and interest, hopeless/helpless attitude, social isolation, fatigue, changes in sleep and appetite, and possible thoughts of suicide. The stress and anxiety resulting from the intensity of medical school are possible causes of depressive symptoms.

Suicidality / Homicidality

  • Usually associated with depression. Thoughts of being better off dead, wanting to die, or dwelling on the topic of death and dying. Making plans to prepare for death such as saying goodbye to others, updating a will, and giving things away. Social withdrawal, talking openly about unbearable pain, and feeling like a burden on others. Taking about wanting to stalk, hurt, or kill another person.


  • Loss of control over the amount of and frequency of using a substance or engaging in an activity. Craving and compulsiveness. Continued use and activity in the face of adverse consequences. Increased tolerance for a substance as the body adapts to its presence.

The symptoms of the conditions listed above vary from one individual to the next. Other common reasons for seeking counseling are the stressors of transitioning to a new environment or lifestyle, academic challenges, and relationship struggles.
