Dr. Joanow was also instrumental in founding a local grassroots organization that utilized local, state and national experts from across the country to stop the opening of a quarry that contained soil asbestos, tremolite. This effort was reported in the NYC news market and was recognized as the story of the year in the The Times Herald record.
