Alex Joanow, DO, FACOOG
Dr. Joanow is a Board-Certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist and serves as Director of Clinical Rotations at Touro in Middletown. Practicing Women’s Healthcare for more than 26 years in Orange County, he is a founding partner of Horizon Family Medical Group where he also serves as the Director of Medical Education and is responsible for overseeing the clinical education of 3rd year students from Touro. Horizon Family Medical Group is a large multispecialty group with more than 120 providers in 38 locations throughout Orange County. Horizon is certified NCQA Patient- Centered Medical Home level 3. This is the highest level attainable. Horizon was recently awarded the prestigious National HIMMS Davies Award in 2016. This award signifies the utilization of technology to help advance healthcare and achieve a higher level of outcomes for patients. Horizon providers are committed to providing the highest quality care with a focus on innovation and continuing clinical education and development. Throughout his career, Dr. Joanow has always been committed to medical education and has provided countless hours of clinical training to interns, residents and physician assistant students from several local college programs. He is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship at The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then completed his OB/GYN residency at The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Suburban General Hospital. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Joanow served four years as a National Health Service Corps Scholar in rural Pennsylvania. He was part of a pilot program that merged global obstetrical care with global ancillary and support services to achieve enhanced health outcomes. This program became the foundation for the development of subsequent enhanced global programs throughout the state. Over the years, Dr. Joanow has served in advisory roles for many local, state and national organizations including serving as a committee member for The American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists, an expert reviewer for The Office of Professional Medical Conduct for the New York State Department of Health and a member of a Joint Advisory Board overseeing a large three hospital system in the region. Locally he has been a frequent contributor to various publications and broadcasts on pertinent and timely health issues and was a featured physician in a nationally syndicated one-hour documentary on Fox News entitled “Winning the War on Cancer”. Dr. Joanow and his staff were also featured in a nationally distributed Continuing Medical Education DVD. The topic was HPV exposure and immunization strategies. Dr. Joanow has been heavily involved in designing and implementing numerous health improvement strategies within his community. Dr. Joanow initiated a local campaign to increase awareness to sudden cardiac arrest and public access to defibrillation. He enlisted the help of state and national organizations such as Parent Heart Watch and The Louis Acompora Memorial Foundation to achieve this goal. This campaign started with donations of portable AED’s to a local school district. The mission continued with the school district expanding with the placement of multiple “Code Blue Units” at all the school’s grounds and athletic facilities. “Code Blue Units” are climate controlled boxes that contain portable AED’s and are immediate call boxes to the police department. Dr. Joanow then partnered with the Village Mayor and Town Supervisor to petition for funds that led to the placement of “Code Blue Units” at athletic fields throughout the Town of Warwick including the villages of Warwick, Florida and Greenwood Lake. Dr. Joanow was also instrumental in founding a local grassroots organization that utilized local, state and national experts from across the country to stop the opening of a quarry that contained soil asbestos, tremolite. This effort was reported in the NYC news market and was recognized as the story of the year in the The Times Herald record. Dr. Joanow resides in Warwick, NY with his wife Marie and enjoys frequent visits from his adult children.
