Students from Touro College of Pharmacy and Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine taught elementary school children from P.S. 197 in Harlem during Touro’s “Health Literacy Immersion Day” on December 9, 2010.

More than 200 students, in grades kindergarten to third grade, participated in the event, which was part of the Touro-Harlem Medical Library “HealthStart!” grant - a medication safety and health literacy project funded by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Health and Human Services. Students visited the Touro-Harlem Medical Library, pharmacy practice lab and lecture halls, pathology lab, and the osteopathic manipulative medicine labs to learn about various topics, including: using medical libraries for health information; medication safety; how the body works and proper nutrition; germs and hygiene; diabetes and foot care; asthma and its treatment; as well as careers in the health sciences. The children learned about using electronic clickers and worksheets to answer questions about medication safety.
