Celebrate Black History Month – Focus on Dr. Valerie Thomas
In recognition of Black History Month, it is our honor to recognize Dr. Valerie L Thomas, the NASA physicist and inventor of the Illusion Transmitter in 1980. Her groundbreaking contributions inspire us to reflect on the remarkable achievements of Black innovators in science and technology.
Dr. Valerie L. Thomas, born in February 1943 in Maryland, exemplifies the spirit of innovation and perseverance. From a young age, her fascination with technology sparked an insatiable curiosity. Despite initial setbacks and a lack of encouragement from home and community, particularly regarding scientific pursuits for women, Valerie's determination led her to pursue a physics major at Morgan State University.
Her academic prowess landed her a position at NASA, where she excelled as a mathematical/data analyst. It was during her tenure at NASA that Valerie's inventiveness flourished. Inspired by an illusion she witnessed in 1976, she embarked on a journey of experimentation and innovation, ultimately leading to her groundbreaking invention: the illusion transmitter. This technology is still integral to NASA's operations and has significantly contributed to the development of 3D movies, laying essential groundwork for advancements in visual technology.
