Janell Wright was born in Jamaica but came to the US on a college scholarship when she was 19. “I had never travelled before and suddenly I was in a completely different place,” laughed Wright. “I went from the Caribbean’s tropical weather to the bitter cold of the northeast.”

Wright attended Mount Holyoke College and studied Biological Sciences and Chemistry. After graduating, she worked as a researcher at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and as an EMT for Northwell Health.  She is a graduate of the TouroCOM Harlem Master of Science Program in Interdisciplinary Studies in Biological and Physical Sciences. “I loved the master’s program,” said Wright. “I feel very confident going into my first year of medical school.”

Wright said that her desire to become a doctor stems from growing up in a rural part of Jamaica. “We had no emergency services there,” said Wright. “There weren’t any doctors in my community. And, when someone got sick, a neighbor had to rush them to the hospital miles away. I wanted to be that person who could help.”

World Traveler: Wright is an avid traveler. Her favorite place so far? Mykonos, Greece.
