After an injury sidelined Stephen Hongach’s college football career, Hongach found a new passion. “I felt defeated, but at the same time, it opened up a new door and I’ve loved medicine ever since.”

Hongach transferred from Rutgers University to the College of Staten Island where he majored in biology and was an honors student. After graduating, Hongach enrolled in Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and earned a Master’s in Human Nutrition. Hongach felt that the degree would help him as a practicing doctor. “Good nutrition is vital to our health and overall wellbeing. There are only so many hours in medical school and we may not have that much time to allocate towards studying nutrition,” said Hongach. “I felt it would be a great asset to have.”

Fun Fact: Hongach has a minor in philosophy. His favorite philosopher? Aristotle.
