TouroCOM Harlem Class of 2022 Member Sheila Krishnan

Sheila Krishnan is one of the few, if any students in TouroCOM’s history to have an undergraduate degree in linguistics. “I went into college knowing I didn’t want to major in science and I found out that Columbia had a great linguistics department; I took a class during my first semester and fell in love,” said Krishnan who graduated from Barnard College in 2015.

Her study in linguistics has affected the research she has done in the past, including studying the ways in which autism can affect language and communication. After Barnard, Krishnan attended the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for a Master’s in Public Health. Krishnan said she always knew she wanted to be a doctor; both her parents are physicians and, as a teenager, she volunteered at another Touro medical school, New York Medical College. Her reasons for choosing TouroCOM? “Touro has a long history of giving back,” she said.

Fun Fact: Krishnan paints miniature reproductions of famous art pieces on her nails, including the work of Monet and Van Gogh.
