Alexandra Over’s medical career is just beginning. Over, who grew up in DC, knew she wanted to do something in the sciences ever since her high school science teacher brought in an aquarium tank filled with zebrafish. “In a different world, I would’ve liked to be a science teacher,” she said.

Over attended Brandeis where she majored in bio and minored in art history. For one semester, she studied marine biology on Turks and Caicaos Islands before deciding on medicine. “I really wanted to interact with patients,” Over explained. Over’s parents are retired economists who worked at the World Bank. “Everyone in my family is motivated to have a global impact,” she said. After graduating, she spent half-a-year volunteering in Manila and helped develop a standard operating manual for a tuberculosis laboratory. She then spent two years working at a bio-technology company where she helped develop a patent for a technology that increases the specifity of gene testing.

Fun Fact: She was once in Sports Illustrated modelling a concussion injury.
