High school student and MedAchieve Scholar Kadijatou Gory said that while she enjoyed all the aspects of MedAchieve—a TouroCOM program that introduces high school students to the world of medicine and medical school—she said that her favorite part of the program was sitting a few feet away: her mentor, TouroCOM Harlem student Douglas Burns.
In the spring of 2013, Jemima Akinsanya, then a first-year student at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM), was tutoring a local high school sophomore through MedAchieve, an after-school medical science enrichment program based in Harlem, when she had an insight. This young student was bright and ambitious; however, Akinsanya realized, perhaps she lacked a clear road map to achieve her goals.
Jordan McDonald, a freshman at St. Bonaventure University in Albany, New York, was accepted last year into a combined-degree program that grants talented high school seniors provisional acceptance into medical school. When he begins his sophomore year in the fall, he will decide where he wants to go to medical school. He hopes one day to become a neurosurgeon.
