Students from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Middletown campus recently volunteered for the school’s Medical Brigade mission in Honduras, where they provided critical healthcare services to residents of underserved communities in Pedregal and Las Crucitas.
Coming from a family of orthopedic surgeons, Salvatore Sclafani had seen his fair share of surgical procedures growing up. However, this summer, with a year of medical school under his belt, he was now able to apply the knowledge he had gained to a research study during his internship with Dr. Anthony Scillia, an orthopedic surgeon at Atlantic Sports Health in New Jersey.
The students who spearheaded the endeavor, Neomal Muthumala and Sam Sirotnikov, said that they wanted to do something that would help Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine remember their inaugural class. A tree, they said, would be perfect.
As the inaugural class at TouroCOM-Middletown finishes up their second year of medical school, preparing to take their board exams and head out to hospitals and rotations for their third and fourth years, they will be accompanied by homemade gift bags—courtesy of their underclassmen.
