Students will spend a month rotating in the Center for Recovery, Orange County’s only Medicated- Assisted Treatment Program and work with a board certified addiction medicine specialist. Medicated- Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of FDA- approved medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies to provide a “whole- patient” approach to the treatment of substance use disorders. The student will be exposed to the evaluation of patients seeking treatment for addiction, the management of patients with Methadone and Subuxone, evaluating the primary medical needs of the patients and the opportunity to attend group sessions. There will also be an opportunity to assist in an ongoing research project involving treatment of Hepatitis C through Telemedicine for patients at an MAT. OXYVITA Inc.

Specialty: Research

Sub-Specialty: Research
Affiliated GME Program:

OXYVITA Inc. offers the opportunity for students to participate in research and development of our product, OxyVita, an oxygen carrier, more commonly known as a blood substitute, which is a pioneering product in its industry. This remarkable new generation product  is aimed at replacing the oxygen delivery function of a blood transfusion, while overcoming a significant amount of shortcomings of the traditional red blood cell or whole blood transfusions. In this sequence, we will review publications on the subject matter, analyze past results, learn about the product’s characteristics and applications of the technology  to potential treatment modes for cardiac infarct, stroke, traumatic brain injury, sickle cell anemia, high altitude sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning and others. Further, we will examine the expected results through bench studies using OxyVita while simulating scenarios pertaining to the treatment of the subject being studied. We will explore laboratory techniques utilized in research and pharmaceutical settings, and apply them to the experiments. The opportunity to be exposed to laboratory settings, experiment design, pharmaceutical experimental equipment and methods, as well as the potential to uncover new frontiers in this novel field awaits! The location will be the OXYVITA Inc. laboratory on the ground floor of the Horton campus.
